Stock exchanges should present more information regarding the money they generate from selling market data to boost transparency on higher industry costs and possible conflicts of interest.

IEX Group official John Ramsay said Wednesday that the industry has been deliberating over the rate of market data, and revealing additional details would help the debate. He added the SEC never acted on its 2004 proposal to oblige operators to submit their report outlining earnings from market data offerings.

Currently, the bourse said data on the exchange or market information can be accessed for free through their Investors Exchange.

A Nasdaq spokesperson stressed their business is mainly competitive and providing market data is only an aspect that they compete. The NYSE and CBOE Holdings refused to shed light on the matter.
