Bitcoin futures have started starting on a major exchange for the first time, bringing cryptocurrency to Wall Street.

The first bitcoin future trades started at 2300 GMT on CBEO Global Market Inc.'s CBOE Futures Exchange. Bitcoin January futures traded at $15, 940, with 398 contracts traded. It opened at $15,460.

The digital currency's futures were volatile during the first 20 minutes of trading, rising to around $16, 600 before reversing its gains.According to Bob Fitzsimmons at Wedbush Securities, around 150 trades were made in the first few minutes.

The bitcoin futures are cash-settled contracts derived on the selling price of bitcoin in U.S. dollar basis on the Gemini Exchange.

The move by CBOE is expected to be followed next week by a rival listing on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.

Anticipation of the first mainstream listings have fueled the currency's rally past $10, 000 and then beat $17, 000 on Thursday before reversing some of its gains. On Sunday, bitcoin traded up 2.62 percent on the Bitstamp exchange. On the Gemini exchange, it traded at around $15, 230 on Monday, according to Coindesk.com.
